AIRPORT OVERVIEW

Hunt Field is located in Lander, Wyoming, a community of approximately 7,500 people in central Wyoming. The airport is the busiest general aviation airport in the state, serving as a base of operations for medical evacuation, corporate, recreational, tourist and governmental flight operations.  Hunt Field includes one runway, a full-length parallel taxiway, 62 based aircraft, and 49 hangar facilities. Hunt Field has been an Armstrong client since 2010. Since then, we have completed numerous AIP projects, a few of which are outlined below.

ENGINEERING SERVICES

RUNWAY 3/21 RECONSTRUCTION

Runway 3/21 had reached a point where major rehabilitation and reconstruction was required to extend the life of the runway pavement. The first (preliminary) phase of design involved evaluating the existing site conditions and determine the appropriate methodology for extending the life of the runway pavement. It was determined that the appropriate methodology, given the findings of the geotechnical investigation, was to pulverize the existing pavement section and incorporate the pulverized asphalt material into select areas of the subbase and base courses of the reconstructed pavement section. Since it was determined that reconstruction of the existing pavement was necessary, the runway width was reduced to the standard of 75 feet. In order to better accommodate snow removal activities, however, 12.5-foot wide paved shoulders were constructed on both sides of the runway. Based on the dimensions shown on the approved Airport Layout Plan, the runway length was shortened to 5,000 feet to help minimize the amount of safety area grading required off of the runway ends. Due to changes in magnetic declination, the runway designation required revision to Runway 4/22. As part of this project, the remaining airfield pavements were maintained and re-striped, and the airfield lighting system was replaced which included LED runway edge and threshold lights, a lighted wind cone, new REILs and PAPIs, and numerous vault upgrades.

VALUE ADDED SERVICES

Armstrong serves as the on-call Airport Engineering consultant for Hunt Field. In this capacity, we regularly attend airport board meetings, assist the City and airport with: submitting Form 7460-1 Notice of Proposed Construction forms, annually updating the Wyoming Airport Capital Improvement Program for the airport, compiling and submitting CatEx forms for hangar development, providing technical assistance with grant administration and grant compliance issues, and making recommendations with regards to airport operational issues.
